Former Albion boss Oscar Garcia has been sacked – after a contentious VAR handball proved to be the final nail.

Oscar was dismissed by Spanish strugglers Celta this morning after a year in charge.

He signed a new two-year deal in the summer and had hoped to stay on until the club celebrated their centenary in 2023.

Celta turned in their best display of the season so far at the weekend but only drew 1-1 at Elche.

The host went ahead from an early VAR-awarded penalty after a header hit the hand of Hugo Mallo from point blank range, similar to the spot kick awarded to Leicester.

Oscar was in charge of Albion during the 2013-14 season.

He was known to be under pressure at Celta after his side, who stayed up on the final day of last season, got off to a slow start.

A win at Elche may have served as a stay of execution.

Celta are just above the drop zone with seven points from nine games.

Oscar's assistant Ruben Martinez, the former Albion goalkeeping coach, has also left. He was shown a red card after just five minutes at Elche for dissent.
