These are the England under-21s who played against Switzerland at the Amex five years ago this evening.

Gareth Southgate was in charge and saw his side come from behind to win 3-1 in a Euro qualifier.

But where are they all now?

Jordan Pickford: Picked ahead of Christian Walton, he was perhaps fortunate not to be shown at least a yellow card for his follow through when Shani Tarashaj put Switzerland ahead. He has gone on to win 29 senior caps and play at a World Cup, famously helping England through their shoot-out with Colombia en route to the semis.

Dominic Iorfa: Now at Sheffield Wednesday and has not ruled out emulating his father, who played international football for Nigeria.

Calum Chambers: The Arsenal defender already had three senior caps to his name at the time of his trip to the Amex and has not since added to them.

Nathaniel Chalobah: Was on loan from Chelsea to Napoli at the time of this match but has since moved on to Watford. He earned his so far only senior England cap three years after this game at the Amex when he went on as sub in injury time during the 3-2 win away to Spain in the Nations League.

Matt Targett: The Aston Villa left-back earned 12 under-21 caps but has not made the step up.

The Argus:

James Ward-Prowse, pictured above: This was one of 31 caps at under-21 level and his spot kick was one of six goals he scored at the level. He has four senior caps and was mentioned last week when his withdrawal from the squad led to teenager Jude Bellingham being called in.

The Argus:

Lewis Baker, pictured above: The Chelsea midfielder was on loan at Vitesse Arnhem at the time and is currently on a similar deal with Trabzonspor in Turkey. He still awaits his first senior cap.

Solly March: This was one of three under-21 caps. He scored one goal.

The Argus:

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, pictured above: The Chelsea midfielder received his first senior call-up two years after this game and is now on ten caps.

John Swift: Was looking to come through at Chelsea at the time but has found a niche at Reading, where he is well into three figures for appearances. Played 13 times for England under-21s but is another who did not get into the seniors.

The Argus:

Dominic Solanke, pictured above: There was no goal for him at the Amex but he scored nine in 18 games for the under-21s. On loan from Chelsea to Vitesse Arnhem at the time of this match, he went on to Liverpool and now Bournemouth. His one senior England cap came two years after this Amex game when he went on as a late sub at Wembley during a 0-0 friendly draw with Brazil.

Subs used – Chuba Akpom: The then Arsenal striker was on loan at Hull City when he made his goal-scoring entrance at the Amex and is now at Middlesbrough. His under-21s career was brief, with three goals in five games, and he has not been a part of the senior set-up. Spent time on loan to Albion in the season after this match.

The Argus:

Duncan Watmore, pictured above: The unlikely star of the show as he went on as sub and changed the game. He forced a penalty, scored himself and then teed up Akpom. By the end, fans were cheering his every touch and urging him to go for goal again. Within a week he had signed a four-year deal with Sunderland, who were in the Premier League, but his time there was badly affected by a serious knee injury. He was released by the Black Cats, by now in League One, this year and remains a free agent, although he has been training with Middlesbrough and hopes to sign a deal.

Jake Forster-Caskey: Had been quite a central figure for Southgate’s under-21s and won 14 caps in total. This game came soon after he returned from the first of two loan periods with MK Dons. He is now with Charlton.

NB: Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton was among the unused subs.
