Albion face a decision over their penalty-taker after another hit-and-miss afternoon at the Amex.

Pascal Gross scored after Neal Maupay failed – the second time that scenario has happened this year.

The first was in a friendly against Chelsea as Gross netted the only goal Albion fans have cheered in person at the Amex since Leandro Trossard scored against Aston Villa on January 18.

Liverpool had clearly seen that Gross spot kick, sent low to the right of Willy Caballero.

The instruction, or reminder, went out from the technical area for Alisson to dive that way.

Gross stuttered as he stepped up and went down the middle.

Head coach Graham Potter was non-committal soon after the game as to who would step up for the Seagulls’ next spot kick.

They have already been awarded four this term, compared to two for the whole of last season.

Potter said in his post-match Zoom session: “It’s a bit soon after the game to make those calls and decisions.

“We will have a bit of a reflection and see what the right thing to do is.”

Maupay retained spot-kick duties this season even after successive efforts were saved, at Leicester in the Premier League restart fixtures and in that Chelsea friendly.

He responded with conversions against Newcastle and Manchester United but it remains to be seen what happens now.

Albion’s penalty record since joining the Premier League is okay but not outstanding.

Gross’s late equaliser was their 14th success in the Prem out of 19 attempted.

Glenn Murray and Maupay have each failed twice and Gross had a 12-yarder saved by Marcus Bettinelli at home to Fulham two years ago.

Ironically, Gross’s one lapse came in another of those games in which Albion had two penalties.

Murray converted later as the Seagulls came from 2-0 down for a point against the Cottagers.

The 14 conversions in the Prem have been by Murray, with eight, and Maupay and Gross, with three apiece.

Some basic stats underline how important spot kicks are towards the final outcome.

Albion have never missed a Premier League penalty and still won the game.

In fact, the last time they had that luxury dates back to the League One title-winning season ten years ago.

Gary Dicker had a spot kick saved (he had scored one earlier in the game) but his team went on to beat Swindon 2-1.

But only twice in the Prem have they scored a penalty and still lost.

WHY GROSS IS MAN FOR ALL (PREM) SEASONS

Gross’s finish was Albion’s 51st penalty conversion in league and cup (excluding shoot outs) since moving to the Amex.

They have failed with 15 (home and away) in that time, three of them by Ashley Barnes and two apiece by Murray, Maupay, Tomer Hemed and Leo Ulloa.
