Former Albion defender Matt Upson came up with an amusing take as Jack Grealish forced a free-kick tonight.

Upson, working for BBC 5Live, was not impressed as the Aston Villa skipper outwitted Vlad Coufal in his team's 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

The Czech international was penalised by referee Peter Bankes.

Upson told listeners: “It’s hard to see how the referee hasn’t read the script on that one, isn’t it?

“We could see it here and we are a fair distance away.

“Jack Grealish waited for the contact and literally just dived on the floor.

“Coufal did nothing running alongside him.

“I can see Grealish having a cheeky little chuckle to himself and happy with the free-kick he has just won.”

Albion fans felt Grealish went down very easily when Tariq Lamptey was sent off for a second booking as the Seagulls won at Villa Park recently.

Upson was full of praise for some of Grealish’s contributions when he got on the ball.

And he added Villa were very unlucky to be denied an equaliser, through Ollie Watkins, by the final forensic VAR offside call of another weekend of controversy.

He said: “The offside part of VAR is taking away more than it is giving.”

Earlier Fulham won 2-1 at Leicester in a clash between two of Albion’s next three opponents.

The Cottagers’ impressive win left them three points behind the Seagulls.
