Albion want to give Andi Zeqiri some playing time.

Steven Alzate and Jayson Molumby both had 90 minutes for the under-23s in their 1-0 win at Southampton on Monday.

Zeqiri might have joined them but for illness.

The Switzerland under-21 international striker has impressed in training.

But he has yet to get game time with the seniors or Simon Rusk’s youngsters.

Head coach Graham Potter admits Zeqiri is probably ready for that sort of run out.

Potter told The Argus: “He had a bit of a bug last week. There was a bit of it going around.

“That probably meant he didn’t play in the game against Southampton, which would have made sense for him to play in.

“But he trains really well. He has had a good introduction into the group.

“They really like him and he has made a first impression that is positive for us.

“Now it’s a case of we have got a lot of players.

“I think I counted 26, 28 in our squad and we can only pick 11 so there will always be someone who is not playing.

“That’s just how it is but we are really happy with how he has been and now it’s just a case of trying to get him on the pitch and fond that pathway to getting games.”

Potter was taken back to an era when players not making the first team squad would play for the reserves.

That has now changed but the under-23s offer a chance of game time.

Potter said: “There is a point where players need that time on the pitch.

“Although times have changed since those days when players who didn’t play in the first team played in the reserves, still there is a time when you can train but it’s nice for your own perspective, psychologically, that you can be out on the pitch.

“When the chance does come you at least have had some game time.”

Zeqiri did not feature for the 23s at Manchester City yesterday in the run-up to the Southampton game in the Premier League.

Although a first senior outing moved further away when Danny Welbeck signed, Albion will be keen to have him around with Adam Lallana ruled out and Neal Maupay racing against time to be fit.
