Former England international Karen Carney believes Albion ‘lack the nastiness’ to grind out results, despite them beating Newport 4-3 on penalties in the FA Cup third round.

Graham Potter’s side had looked to be going through to the fourth round after Solly March fired them ahead in the 90th minute.

However, six minutes into stoppage time a cross from Liam Sheppard was missed by keeper Jason Steele and the ball hit the unfortunate Adam Webster and went in, meaning the game went to extra time.

After another half-an-hour where both sides could not be separated, it came down to a penalty shootout, which Albion won after four superb saves from Steele.

Despite picking up the win, Carney believes the Seagulls need to toughen up.

Speaking on the BBC’s FA Cup highlights show last night, she said: “This is the game management for Brighton, you are six minutes over the 90, and the ball goes in.

“He clearly tries to punch it Steele and takes his eye off it, comes out and does not make any contact on it, and then it goes in as an own goal off Webster.

“That is just the side of Brighton that I don’t see the nastiness of going ahead and then grinding out a result.”
