Albion head coach Graham Potter believes that their performances have been better than last season, but knows they need to start getting the points and results to match them.

The Seagulls put in a valiant display at Manchester City on Wednesday, but lost 1-0, and with Fulham then drawing 1-1 at Tottenham later that night it leaves them just two points above the bottom three.

They now prepare to go on the road again this afternoon when they travel to Leeds looking for a much-need win.

However, Potter does not believe their performances have been the problem.

He said: “We have had 18 games in the league now and apart from one or one-and-a-half games our performance level has been better than at any other point last season.

“The problem we have had is that we have not had the points and results that follow that.

“So, you can talk about performances, but at the end of the day we know we have to get results, we know we have to get points.

“But we also have to believe we are on the right path.

“We are fighting for each other which is clear and we need to keep moving forward.”

Albion head to Yorkshire having not won in nine games and with only two wins to their name this season.

The Seagulls have also failed to score in four of their last seven games and failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six matches.

That form has led to pundits questioning whether they can stay in the Premier League.

In the last few weeks on Match of the Day, former England internationals Karen Carney and Leon Osman have revealed they ‘fear’ for Albion.

But despite their fears, Potter has reiterated that his side have the spirit and belief they need to win games.

He said: “Like I say the spirit has always been there, but we have to try and get the results and points that is clear.

“But the players give everything. They are a good group that wants to win and play well and want to fight for each other.

“So, that is all I can ask for as a coach. We have got a team that gives everything and leaves everything on the pitch and that is what we did tonight (Wednesday) and we will need to do that again on Saturday.”

Albion will hope to end their tough week on a high at Elland Road.

This afternoon’s game will be their sixth in the space of seven days and their eighth game in just over a month.

But Potter knows that hectic schedule cannot be used as an excuse for their recent form.

He said: “We said at the start of the week it was going to be a tough week for us.

“We had Newport away in the FA Cup, everybody knows how precarious that is and how difficult that is for different reasons.

“Then you come to this place (Etihad) where it is the same game, but it feels like a different sport with the challenges you face and they are one of the best teams in world football.

“Then you have to recover quickly for Leeds United, who are physically amazing, they run so much, fight so much and we have to match that, be smart and play against another good team.”
