Albion head coach Hope Powell was disappointed that her side could not pick up all three points after they began 2021 with a 0-0 draw against Birmingham City.

The Seagulls had most of the play and the better of the chances at Damson Park, but were unable to find a way past Hannah Hampton in the hosts’ goal.

However, Powell believes they should have taken all the points home with them.

She said: “I think we competed well and we created lots of chances – had good ball possession – it was just scoring really.

“That being said, I think the attitude of the players during this week, and before, with everything that’s gone on, was good.

“We tried to compete. We tried to win the game. I’m happy we came away with a point. I’m disappointed we didn’t get three points but pleased that we didn’t lose and we come away with a point.

“Scoring goals is the hardest thing. We did well getting into that final third but it’s goals that count and, unfortunately, if you don’t score enough, you’re not going to win the game. I have to be pleased with a point considering all the circumstances.”

Albion duo Rianna Jarrett and Ellie Brazil forced the Blues’ goalkeeper into a couple of early saves, while a good passing move led to Brazil working a yard of space in the box, but she turned and fired over.

Birmingham threatened most from corners and quick breaks, with wingers Jamie-Lee Napier and debutant Emily Murphy released in behind the Seagulls defence by balls over the top. Murphy had the beating of her full-back but couldn’t find a telling delivery.

A long-range shot from Inessa Kaagman was dealt with by Hampton, who also swept up the danger when Harriet Scott was caught in possession.

Late in the first half, Danielle Bowman broke through and should have done better, shooting tamely when she had a teammate free in the box.

Albion continued to threaten after the break. Kaagman unsuccessfully tried to catch Hampton out at her near post from a free kick, while the menacing Brazil and Jarrett were also kept at bay.

Birmingham battled well and caused problems from set pieces but lacked quality.

In the end, the Blues will have been the more pleased of the two with a point.
