Albion defender Tariq Lamptey believes that head coach Graham Potter knows how to get the best out of younger players.

Since Potter joined the club in May 2019, he has given younger players such as Lamptey, Aaron Connolly, Steven Alzate and most recently Robert Sanchez a chance in the first team.

But in the process, he has had to make some big calls with Sanchez taking the place of Maty Ryan as Albion’s No.1.

That has seen the Australian international left out of the side and potentially on his way out of the club this month.

However, Lamptey believes that Potter’s approach with younger players has been refreshing to see.

He told The Argus: “I think when you are a young player you just try to work as hard as possible to get yourself into the team and when you get to that position you just train as well as you can.

“But when you have a manager that is not scared to put young players into the team and gives you a chance, it gives you confidence and he always tells you he believes in you.

“So, when you have that and you hear that I don’t think there is anything better because you have the confidence in yourself to go out and play to the best of your abilities.

“I really enjoy working under him.”

Lamptey joined the Seagulls just under a year ago and has become a key player for them since impressing on his Premier League debut against Leicester in June.

He has continued his fine form so far this season and in his 11 appearances he has scored one goal and got three assists.

His performances have seen him earn his first call-up and cap for England U21’s in September.

But is he targeting a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s senior side in the future?

He said: “I think every player’s dream is to play at the highest level.

“If I keep working hard, keep my head down, keep putting in good performances for the club and keep developing my game then we will see what happens next.”

Lamptey was asked if there are any players in the Albion squad that he has learnt a lot off, to which he replied: “There are so many players.

“They are all really good role models for me because when you come into senior football you always look at people in the dressing room and try to see who you can learn things off.

“The way everyone trains I like to look at all the players and pick certain things from them.

“So, I am really blessed we have a really great squad here that I can learn so many things off.”
