Albion head coach Graham Potter is delighted with the contribution Neal Maupay has made to their season so far.

The 24-year-old scored his seventh goal of the campaign to get them a much-needed win at Leeds on Saturday.

Since he joined the Seagulls in August 2019, he has scored 17 goals, after he netted ten times in his debut season in the top flight.

However, Maupay has had a mixed campaign so far.

After scoring four goals in Albion’s first four Premier League games, he then went eight matches without finding the back of the net.

But since then he has scored three goals in his last five games and Potter has been impressed with how Maupay has adapted to the Premier League.

He said: “It is the life of a Premier League player I would say, the life of a Premier League forward.

“Certainly one that is making the step up from playing in the Championship not so long back.

“He is learning all the time, trying to improve all the time. He is not perfect but none of us are.

“Neal will get better and we are delighted with him, but he needs to try to carry on doing that.”

Maupay has faced increased competition for his place up front in this campaign, with the Seagulls having signed Andi Zeqiri and Danny Welbeck and then earlier this month recalled Percy Tau from his loan at Anderlecht.

With Aaron Connolly and Welbeck out injured at the moment, it means once they return there will be five strikers fighting for the chance to play through the middle.

However, Potter does not believe Maupay’s form has been down to the increased competition for places.

He said: “I just think that sometimes it is the life of a forward.

“Sometimes if the team does not win or we do not get the points, I think that sometimes you can put yourself under a bit of pressure, you can think that you should be scoring or you should be doing this or you should be doing that.

“But sometimes it is just easier to simplify things, work hard for the team and understand that every forward comes through periods where is it not their day.

“Then it is up to the team to try and help them through that and to keep working, keep being humble, understand that things will turn around, and then just to keep fighting.”
