Albion chief executive Paul Barber admits players are doing their best to tone down their goal celebrations.

There has been a lot of talk and some criticism in recent weeks about how goals are celebrated amid the rising number of Coronavirus cases in the UK.

Government officials have come out recently telling players to try and limit social contact in their goal celebrations.

But Barber believes that both players and coaching staff are doing their best to set a good example.

Speaking on TalkSport, he said: "With regards to the players there were always lots of things that we could control and manage before and after the game whether it was hand-shaking, hugging before the game, swapping shirts, and hugging after the game.

“The most difficult thing is that emotional reaction when a goal is scored. We all know that is the best part of football.

“It is one of the lowest scoring sports in the world with the number of goals in our games compared to something like Basketball where you might get 200 points a game.

“So, every goal is precious, every goal is spontaneously celebrated that was always going to be the challenge.

“But the players are doing their best to be entirely responsible, as they know they are looked upon as role-models by many people and they doing their best.

“I also know that the clubs are as well we have also spoken to our players and coaches. Everyone understands the difficult situation the whole country is in and we are doing our best to support that.”

Barber was also asked about Albion’s plan for adding to the squad during the transfer window, to which he replied: “I think over the season we have been really frustrated with the performances that we have put in, as in many games we have been far better than the results that we have actually got.

“The players have actually performed really well and the coaching staff are doing a great job of playing good football.

“We just haven’t got the results in all of the games that we would have hoped to have done.

“As always when we can strengthen the squad, we will look at those opportunities.

“But overall, we are happy with the group of players we have got and we are looking forward to the second half of the season.”
