Graham Potter believes Albion must have an eye for a bargain.

And the addition of Moises Caicedo from Ecuador shows one way of doing it.

The 19-year-old midfielder has signed for a reported £4 million and is one for the longer term.

Albion cannot match big-hitting Prem rivals in the transfer market.

But they are just as capable of doing their homework and offering a route to the Prem.

It is a method which requires patience and foresight.

Caicedo arrives at time when Albion are just starting to see the rewards of their work with Alexis Mac Allister.

Head coach Potter said: “What it shows is that we’ve done quite well in terms of a pathway for younger players into the first team.

“We know we’re not a development club, we know we’re not an academy, we’re in the Premier League and we have to get results.

“For us to be competitive longer term, we have to have that ability to sign players that haven’t necessarily reached their potential and we’ve got to help them get there.

“That’s how we’ll grow as a football club. That’s exciting.

CAICEDO RECEIVES NEW SQUAD NUMBER

“It’s not easy to do. You’re not buying the sure thing, you’ve got to do a lot of work to take a young person from the other side of the world and expect everything to go smoothly.

“It’s not the reality and a lot of work has to go in.

“That’s what we’re prepared to do and we will do our best.”
