Graham Potter has sidestepped calls for Lewis Dunk to earn a call for the delayed Euro 2020.

But he reckons England have some very good defensive talent if his back three are not getting a look in.

Dunk has been hailed by his boss as Albion’s best player as he aims to lead them to another FA Cup quarter-final.

Victory in the fifth round at Leicester City this evening (7.30pm, BT Sport) would take the Seagulls into the last eight for the third time in four seasons.

Albion’s defenders are attracting widespread praise after a recent solid run – with Dunk being noticed for more than clearances and blocks.

Head coach Potter said: “I don’t know what the perception of him is but I only say that, for us, he’s our best player.

“It’s as simple as that. He’s the captain, his technical ability is amazing when you consider his defensive and physical attributes.

The Argus:

“I think he’s getting better. He’s in the best moment of his career, certainly since I’ve been here.

“He’s adapting and getting better and better with the leadership role as well.

“We’re delighted with him and I think he’s enjoying his football. That’s really important.

“He’s a fantastic player. He’s been so important for us, on and off the pitch.

“I could speak all day about how good he’s been.

“His defensive actions, the way we puts his body in the way of things, his blocks, his responsibility on the ball, his range of pass. He has been fantastic.”

Potter is non-committal on suggestions his once-capped captain is worth another call from Gareth Southgate.

ALBION DUO HAILED AS ROLE MODELS

Dunk, Ben White and Adam Webster have all been spoken about in England terms.

The Albion boss added: “We’re delighted with all three of them.

“But Dunky is our captain, he’s been fantastic and it’s a good sign for English football that those guys can’t get in the national side.

“It means there are clearly some very good players in those positions.”
