Derby defender Curtis Davies has backed Albion to achieve their long-term goal of being a top ten side in the Premier League under Graham Potter.

The Seagulls suffered a late 2-1 defeat to their rivals Crystal Palace at the Amex despite having 25 shots in the match.

The defeat leaves them just four points above the bottom three.

But despite the result Davies knows that Albion are building for the future.

Speaking on the Sky Sports football show yesterday, he said: “Recently they (Albion) have beaten Liverpool.

So it is easy for us to sit here and be criticising them for their loss to Palace, when they adopted a similar approach against Liverpool

“But I personally think when you are having good performances more often than not you will get the results to back it up, but at this nitty gritty stage of the season it is about getting results.

“If we use Palace as an example, to grind out that result and come away with win is massive for them.

“If you want to compare two contrasting styles, Roy Hodgson who is quite defensive and likes to play a lot on the counter attack against a Potter side that like to move the ball and try and play this nice football.

“But ultimately Palace sit ten points above the bottom three, so you would rather be in Palace’s shoes in terms of the table.

“But I totally understand that if you want to build a project which is what Albion want to do under Potter, then you need to build from a foundation of playing football and eventually you will be able to step into the top half.”
