Referees bosses have been advised to call time on Lee Mason.

Former international official Keith Hackett says Mason should be advised to step down.

He believes the error which saw Albion denied a goal from Lewis Dunk’s quick free-kick at West Brom was the final straw.

Mason received widespread criticism for the indecision which saw the goal eventually ruled out.

An injury suffered late in the match ruled him out of an appointment as fourth official at Sheffield United v Liverpool last night.

Albion have made their thoughts known to the Premier League and to the Professional Game Match Officials Board, which Hackett used to head.

Hackett told TalkSPORT radio: “The PGMOL have seriously got to say now, ‘look, it’s about time you should hang the whistle up’. I’m that convinced that Lee Mason is struggling and of course towards the end of the game he should have come off as he was clearly unfit.

WHY WELBECK WAS ON THE SPOT

“He has had three or four major errors over the last month, his confidence must be shot and of course he comes to this particular game and compounds his lack of confidence by making such a basic referring error and makes a fool of himself.

“But, knowing (refs chief) Mike Riley, he’ll give Lee Mason a game tomorrow.

“There really is no accountability at the PGMOL – they go from one crisis to the next and we highlight them every week.

“Referees need support and sometimes that means to take them out of games, not to punish but to aid the recovery process.”

Albion head coach Graham Potter was confused by the disallowed goal but showed a degree of understanding towards Mason.

He said: “I don’t think for one second the referee has meant to do anything if there has been a mistake. It can happen.”
