Albion do not have the greatest record against their opponents on Sunday Southampton.

The Seagulls have not won any of their previous eight meetings with the Saints in all competitions.

They have also failed to beat Southampton in the Premier League in their previous seven meetings.

You would have to go back to January 2012 for the last time that Albion tasted victory over the Saints, which was a 3-0 win at the Amex in the Championship, thanks to a goal from Jake Forster-Caskey and a brace from Matt Sparrow.

The skipper on that day was Gordon Greer, who had led them to winning the League one title in the previous season.

However, it was a disappointing game for Greer, who was sent off in the 87th minute with the Seagulls 3-0 up at the time.

But the former Albion defender recalls his memories of the game and that red card.

He said: “We were winning 3-0 I had no reason to be getting sent off.

“I remember Jonathan Forte was making a run and I stepped across his run and he went down holding his face.

“To be fair my shoulder did go into his face a bit, but he ran into my shoulder. At the end of the day, these things happen.

“I was playing alongside Adam El-Abd at the time and we had good success when a cross came at stepping across and blocking the runner, by putting the brakes on so essentially the striker never got any contact on the ball.

“I remember Forte made the run it was just outside the box and I just put my body in line and blocked him off and got sent off, but the game was done at that point.

“So, it was a disappointing game for me, but it was a great performance from us as a side.

“I remember Forster-Caskey scored in that game. It was very early on in his career.

“At the time we were a really good side and Southampton came up as well, so it was a clash of the teams that had both come up from League One and we managed to get the win which was great.”

One player who Greer came up against in that game was Adam Lallana, who is now at Albion.

The midfielder scored his first goal for the club in their 2-1 defeat to Leicester on Saturday and Greer admits he has always admired him as a player.

He said: “It was a really good signing, I really like him and have always liked him.

“I think Adam is a brilliant footballer, he is really intelligent and by all accounts, he works really hard. So, I thought it was a good signing, but it would be great to see him out on the pitch more as he struggled with injury of late.

“But it was good to see him play the other night and get his first goal for the club, which was really good.”

Albion head into the game against Southampton on Sunday (12pm, BBC Sport) 17th in the Premier League table and just outside of the bottom three on goal difference.

However, Ralph Hasenhuttl will be without his top scorer Danny Ings, who was injured in their win over Sheffield United last weekend and Greer admits he will be a ‘big miss’ for them.

He said: “The Southampton game is a good time to be playing them without Ings.

“They have got some good results of late, but I think Ings is a massive miss for them.”

After facing Southampton, the Seagulls host Newcastle, who sit 16th in the table and Greer believes that game will be a massive one for his former side.

He said:“Obviously you look at the Newcastle game because they are right in amongst those teams that could go down.

“It is an absolutely massive game and it is at home.

“Hopefully, Brighton can repeat the performance they put in at St James’ Park where they won 3-0. But it will be a huge game.”
