Neal Maupay has been urged to fire the goals which help keep Albion up.

The Frenchman looks to repeat his strike at St Mary’s last season as the Seagulls play Southampton on Sunday.

Lloyd Owusu, the ex-Brentford centre-forward whose goals powered one of Albion’s most memorable escapes from relegation, has followed the striker’s progress at two of his old clubs.

Owusu ended a five-game goal drought to score six in six and help keep the Seagulls in League One against the odds back in 2009.

They are far from in Great Escape territory at the moment but will be keen to end a run of two points from a possible 15.

Maupay was known for his work ethic at Griffin Park and his displays for Albion have been industrious – but short on goals.

MODER STARTED FOR MIDFIELD START

Owusu, renowned for his ‘raise the roof’ celebration, said: “I always watch Brentford and we saw Neal score goals for fun.

“It’s a hard one to call because there are so many aspects as to why strikers score lots of goals for one club and, when they come to another club, it’s different. Now he has even gone to the next level.

“He is in the Prem so it is a totally different kettle of fish. He is playing against better defenders.

“I don’t know whether he is doing extra work but, at Brentford, the strikers always used to do extra finishing sessions.

“There are all different scenarios why he might not be firing on all cylinders.

“Hopefully he can keep his head down, keep grafting and it will turn for the last part of the season.”

Albion will have an eye on Newcastle’s result at home to Aston Villa tonight (8pm).
