Percy Tau is having to bide his time to make a big Albion impact.

But head coach Graham Potter says the South Africa international is settling in “fine” after his loan spell at Anderlecht was cut short.

Tau has been on the sidelines since his bright start to life in England in games at Newport County and Manchester City.

He has remained unused in recent times although Albion have been chasing goals late on.

And he did not really convince in two outings he was handed in the FA Cup, versus Blackpool and Leicester.

Still, it is easy to wonder whether he might offer Albion something different with his pace and goalscoring potential.

Maybe not from kick-off but certainly if they are looking for someone to make an impact late on with very little to lose.

Something a little different. A bit of an X-factor, Potter said he is quite happy with how the South Africa international has settled in.

The Albion boss told The Argus: “(He is) fine. He’s a really good guy around the place. A good team player.

“In fairness to Percy, Leo (Trossard) and Neal (Maupay) and the team were on a run of six games without losing so it’s one of those things.

“Sometimes you have to be patient and wait but he is fighting and ready when called on.

“He’s an option that, if we need, he won’t let us down.”

Tau was sent on late at Leeds with his side 1-0 up.

It looked a shrewd move to give the hosts something to think about at their own end of the pitch when all they really wanted to do was attack with abandon.

He was a good outlet and got involved in play but did not retain possession anywhere near as well as his team would have liked in those circumstances.

However, he was not among those to join the action late on during recent defeats.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh was used without success as third sub in late salvage operations against Crystal Palace and Leicester.

Jakub Moder was more productive when introduced with his side 1-0 down at West Brom, again as the last move off the bench.

Tau, or Andi Zeqiri offering a more direct route, also looked good options in those two home games in the quest to do something a bit different.

Potter said: “We’ve used Danny (Welbeck).

The Argus:

THE BIG DECISION OVER WHERE LALLANA PLAYS

"Ali historically has helped us off the bench as well. He has scored some important goals.

“We are just in that position where, certainly late on against West Brom for example, we had so many men anyway in those forward positions, I didn’t feel another one was going to make that much of a difference so Jakub, who has got the ability to shoot from distance, was the late choice.

“Before then I think we brought on Danny.

“That’s the Premier League. You’ve got competition in lots of places. If it’s not Percy, it would be be Danny.

“If it’s not Danny, it would be Aaron Connolly.

“If it’s not Aaron Connolly, it would be Alireza. It’s just how it is.”

Albion have not yet confirmed, one way or the other, whether Tau or other internationals will be released for duty with their countries during the forthcoming break in league action.

Potter said “We’re still in discussion with a couple of the federations.”
