Ben Roberts has the individual touch when it comes to coaching Albion's goalkeepers.

That, head coach Graham Potter believes, is one reason why his latest protege has received an international call-up.

Robert Sanchez can start to focus on a possible Spain debut once he has faced Newcastle at the Amex tomorrow.

He has already been in demand with the Spanish media and he ensured Roberts received a mention.

Sanchez described Albion’s goalkeeping coach as a second father.

Roberts, a promotion play-off winner with the Seagulls in his playing days, has forged a strong reputation in the coaching world.

Nick Pope, one of his discoveries at Charlton, is in the current England group.

Roberts and Casper Ankergren work with Sanchez and his current Albion colleagues.

Potter said of Roberts: “Fundamentally he cares about them as people, that’s the first thing.

“He has had that relationship with Rob, a father figure, where he has given him a kick up the backside, and put his arm around him when he has needed it.

“Tough love versus loving feedback, if you like.

VERSATILE VELTMAN IS SUCH AN ASSET

“He has got that good mix. They know they can’t step out of line but they know that someone cares about them deeply as people and goalkeepers.

“What Ben does well is work with the individual, highlights their strengths, highlights what they can do and designs practices according to that.

POTTER SAYS CONNOLLY MADE A MISTAKE

“While they are all goalkeepers, they are all incredibly different in terms of what they bring.

“We’re very lucky to have Ben, and Casper supports him really well.

“It certainly makes my job easier when you have high quality staff like that around.”
