Albion have been linked with a striker from River Plate.
But is understood the club are mystified by a report in Argentina suggesting they are ready to make an offer for Colombia international Rafael Santos Borre.
The 25-year-old, 5ft 9ins forward is running out of contract with River.
He was a deal in place with Gremio in Brazil.
But River coach Marcelo Gallardo has reportedly advised him to move to Europe if possible.

Albion's name last night emerged in connection with the player.
