Two of Sussex’s England contenders are set to enjoy their first playing time of the summer.

Phil Salt and Ollie Robinson are in a 13-man squad to face Hampshire in a two-day friendly at the Ageas Bowl.

Neither featured as Sussex had the better of their run out versus Surrey earlier this week.

Stuart Meaker also comes into a group with Scott Lenham and Jamie Atkins stepping down.

Sussex are one week from the start of the new-look LV= Insurance County Championship.

Salt and Robinson will be cornerstones of their campaign - IF they are not called away by England.

Sussex coach Ian Salisbury said: “I was really happy with the two days at the Oval.

“Training in the marquee has been brilliant but to actually get out in the middle was sensational.

“All 12 players were outstanding. Everybody batted well, everyone bowled well.”

Robinson has carried the Sussex seam attack at times in recent seasons with the red ball.

That has earned him England squad calls but he still awaits his debut.

He will go through his paces today as Sussex bowl first.

The county got themselves into good positions on first innings during last season’s Bob Willis Trophy.

But, once they had beaten Hampshire in their opening fixture, it turned into a tough campaign.

Salisbury is very aware of the pattern those fixtures tended to follow.

He said: “Last year we played a lot of good cricket over two days, so I’ve asked the lads to carry that on into what can be viewed as days three and four of our preparation for the first Championship game.”

Sussex open their competitive season when they play Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford next Thursday.
