Former Liverpool and England midfielder Steve McManaman believes many clubs would struggle to take Ben White off Albion’s hands.

The 23-year-old defender has impressed so far in his debut season in the Premier League.

He has played in 29 of the Seagulls 30 league games and has caught the eye with his ability to bring the ball out from the back and his versatility with him being able to play at centre back, right wing back and in midfield.

That has seen him linked with clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United, with The Argus understanding that he is on a list of targets for The Red Devils.

But former Reds midfielder McManaman, who does punditry for BT Sport, believes many top six clubs including Liverpool could be priced out of a deal for White.

Speaking to horseracing.net, He said: “Once you’ve landed in the Premier League and you’re here for a while and excelling, that price tag suddenly becomes £80m or £90m.

“You get to a point where you sort of price yourself out of the market because you have become good for another Premier League team.

“Ben White, like Lewis Dunk, like Webster, has done incredibly well for Brighton.

“I saw Ben White play in midfield against Manchester City at the Etihad and more than held his own in that game.

“You can see he’s a wonderful player but whether anybody will take a chance on him because he’s not a huge, big, towering central defender.

“He likes to bring the ball out and some teams like that but I just don’t think a Top Six team would be able to afford him.

“You never know with the money worries of teams within the pandemic but I don’t think anybody would be able to take him off Brighton at this moment in time.”
