It is International Goalkeeper Day – and these are Albion’s top ten men between the sticks in terms of appearances.

Seaford-born Brian Powney leads the way with 386 matches.

Powney played a big part in the Fourth Division title season of 1964-65 and promotion from the third tier seven years later.

At 5ft 9ins, he was closer to Maty Ryan than Robert Sanchez in physical stature.

But, like Sanchez, he emerged having been third in the Albion pecking order.

It is also likely he could have coped with the modern day demands for a keeper to be able to play with his feet.

After leaving Albion, Powney played in midfield for Southwick, taking them to the County League title and the first round of the FA Cup as player/manager.

Bob Whiting, the man he overtook on the list in 1972, is considered one of Albion’s finest ever goalkeepers.

He helped them win the Southern League in 1909-10, conceding just 28 goals in 42 games.

Whiting, born in East London, died in action during the First World War as he attended an injured colleague at Vimy Ridge in northern France.

Albion splashed out £400 (yes, two zeros) to sign Eric Gill from Charlton amid strong competition and he played for most of the 1950s, helping secure promotion from the Third Division (South).
