South Africa want Percy Tau to play for them at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

The 26-year-old is one of seven overage players to be named in their provisional under-23s squad.

In total they have named 40 players in the provisional squad, which will be trimmed down to 23 in their final national training camp in June.

The football at the Olympics will run from July 21 to August 7 meaning that the forward would miss pre-season for the Seagulls but should be back in time for their first game on the 2021-22 season, which kicks off on the weekend of August 14.

Manager David Notoane believes they need the talent of the over-age players to help them achieve them aim of winning a medal.

He said: “We are going to a global showpiece. We are going to come up against the best of the best out there. So we also need to make available the best talents.

“I mention that because it becomes important for me to strengthen the team in certain key areas.

"And also bringing personalities that can help advance our cause.

“Because we are going to the Olympics not to make up the numbers‚ we are going to come back with a medal.

"We are going to the Olympics to improve on South Africa teams’ performances generally.”
