Albion slipped down a place in the Premier League table after Newcastle beat West Ham 3-2 in a five-goal thriller at St James’ Park.

The Magpies took the lead in the 36th minute after Craig Dawson’s loose touch and in his efforts to recover fouled Joelinton on halfway.

Referee Kevin Friend allowed play to continue and Saint-Maximin sprinted away and skipped past Noble before sending the ball towards goal, where Issa Diop got his feet into a tangle and bundled it into his own net.

Dawson, who had been booked earlier for a foul on Joelinton, received a second yellow card and was dismissed to leave the Hammers to play with ten men for over 54 minutes.

The visitors then shot themselves in the foot for a second time five minutes later when goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski spilled Matt Ritchie’s corner to hand Joelinton a simple tap-in from one yard out.

West Ham then pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute after Jarrod Bowen picked out Diop, who headed in to atone for his error.

The Hammers were then awarded a penalty five minutes later after a cross towards the head of Thomas Soucek hit the arm of Ciaran Clark.

Initially Friend had not given the decision, but VAR took plenty of looks at it and while Clark was down having treatment for a head injury, recommended that Friend go over to the pitchside monitor to have a second look at the incident.

After looking at a couple of replays Friend pointed to the spot.

Former Albion loanee, Jesse Lingard stepped up and saw his effort go in off the post to level the match.

In the 81st minute, Newcastle were denied the chance to retake the lead after Jacob Murphy’s effort was cleared off the line by Ben Johnson.

A minute later, Steve Bruce’s side went back in front after Matt Ritchie’s cross was headed in by substitute Joe Willock, two minutes after coming onto the pitch.

The win for the Magpies means that the Seagulls drop to 16th in the table but remain seven points clear of Fulham in 18th with a game in hand.

Although by the time Albion kick off at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, they will have two games in hand over the Cottagers but could be closer to the bottom three with Scott Parker’s side travelling across London to take on Arsenal tomorrow afternoon (1:30pm).
