Ben Brown hopes and expects to see Ollie Robinson called up by England.

But the Sussex skipper and his young side will enjoy having him around for the time being.

Robinson has the club who let him go in his sights today as Sussex open their home programme by playing Yorkshire at Hove.

Both counties are off to strong starts in their six-team group in the new-look LV= Insurance County Championship.

Robinson’s 13 wickets, including a second-innings nine-for, helped Sussex beat Glamorgan in Cardiff.

His haul begged two questions: How long until he makes his Test debut and how will Sussex cope without him?

Brown said: “We are hoping he goes to England. You can’t plan for someone to take over and do what he has done.

“There aren’t those guys. It will be difficult to replace him but we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

“There is a bigger picture.

“I think he is the best seamer in county cricket. He shows that week in and week out.

“Cardiff was extra special because of the surface. The pitch was very flat by the end of day two.

“There was almost nothing in it for the other seamers on the two sides apart from a bit with the new ball.

“To produce what he did has to be his best performance I can remember, even by his high standards. He was absolutely magnificent.”

Lancashire and Yorkshire are widely expected to take the top two spots in the group and qualify for Division One in the second phase and both come to Hove in the next eight days.

But Sussex will enjoy pushing them as hard as they can.

Brown said: “We have been talking a lot about how we improve our cricket long-term.

“It’s ‘how do we win games by an innings?’ and then we work back from there.

“Talking about league positions for a young side is getting ahead of ourselves.

“We need to compete as hard as we can.

“We recognise there will be challenging days ahead. We have a young squad and a small squad.

“Over the next two weeks we will find out more about ourselves. The important things is we compete really well.”
