Albion were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
The only goal of the game in the 19th minute after the Seagulls failed to clear a cross from Enda Stevens and the ball eventually fell to David McGoldrick, who slotted home to scored his eighth goal of the season.
Albion thought they had equalised in the 56th minute, with Jakub Moder putting his effort into the bottom corner after Adam Webster's header as he was falling over fell to the Polish midfielder.
However, VAR ruled the goal out as when Webster headed the ball Moder was offside.
The Seagulls went close late on after substitute Alireza Jahanbakhsh fired in a ball across the face of goal, which Neal Maupay scooped over from close range.
Fellow substitute Jose Izquierdo forced Aaron Ramsdale into a great save to keep out his effort from 30 yards out.
