Sussex have suffered their first defeat of the season.

They went down by 48 runs against Yorkshire at Hove.

The hosts were bowled out for 186 on the final morning of the LV= Insurance County Championship fixture.

Sussex started the day needing another 99 to win with four wickets in hand and much depending on skipper Ben Brown.

Ollie Robinson was quickly lbw to for nine but Jack Carson showed signs of helping Sussex mount a challenge.

He helped Brown add 35 for the eighth wicket.

But Joe Root’s return to the attack from the Sea End brought the breakthrough as he had Carson caught by Adam Lyth at slip for 18 with his third delivery of the morning.

Realistic victory hopes finally disappeared when Brown saw his middle stump taken out by Jordan Thompson for 46.

The contest was over shortly after midday when Henry Crocombe was caught at short mid-wicket off Dom Bess, who finished with 6-53.
