Albion star Adam Webster has praised the big part” Alan McLoughlin played in his career.

The former Portsmouth, Swindon and Republic of Ireland midfielder died aged 54 after a long battle against cancer.

McLoughlin coached in the academy at Fratton Park when Webster was among the young players coming through.

He went on to work with the senior side.

Webster wished McLoughlin well recently when he revealed his major health concerns.

He replied to the update with the message: “Sorry to hear Macca keep fighting and wishing you a speedy recovery!”

Webster was among the many players who reacted to news of McLoughlin’s death yesterday.

He tweeted: “RIP Macca. So sad to hear this news. Played such a big part in mine and many others development in becoming players and more importantly men.”

Former Albion striker John Byrne, who played international football with McLoughlin, also showed support after the update in March.

Byrne tweeted yesterday: “Extremely saddened to hear the news that my former Ireland team mate Alan McLoughlin has passed away. A lovely lovely lad and a top player. Thoughts are with his family tonight. X”
