Albion chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber admits they would have welcomed away fans as they prepare for the return of spectators to the Amex when they host Manchester City on Tuesday, May 18.

The Seagulls announced yesterday that they will host the Premier League leaders – and probably, by then, new champions - before about 7,500 home fans in just under two weeks’ time.

But in a statement yesterday the Premier League announced that the last two rounds of this season will be played before reduced-capacity crowds of home supporters ONLY.

But Barber admits that Albion would have been more than happy to have away fans at the Amex.

However he respects the Premier League’s decision.

Barber told The Argus: “It’s shame but there were some clubs in the Premier League who were struggling to get agreement to accommodate away fans from their local authorities.

“In that regard I think the Premier League have taken the right decision in that we should all have exactly the same conditions.

“We would have been very happy to welcome Manchester City fans here but the positive of not having to is we can accommodate more home fans, which is obviously good news.”

Barber also gave an update on how tickets are selling for their clash with City.

He said: “From what I understand they are selling very well.

“I think people have got a large amount of pent-up demand to get back to a normal life, first and foremost, but football being very much a part of that.

“We are really looking forward to seeing people back here and hopefully seeing their family and friends.

“Obviously, to welcome Manchester City is a big game in itself.

“We will be seeing one of the best teams, if not THE best team in Europe at the moment.

“That gives us a challenge, as a club, to play against that team.

“But I think, for our fans, what a nice way to come back to watch live football again.”
