Palace Pier cruised to victory in the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury this afternoon.

The four-year-old, who is owned by Hove-born training pair John and Thady Gosden, set off as the 1-2 favourite.

But for the majority of the mile contest, Palace Pier had been towards the back of the pack.

However, with three furlongs to go, jockey Frankie Dettori gave Palace Pier the nudge and he burst past the rest of the field to win by one-and-a-half lengths from Lady Bowthorpe.

The four-year-old has now won seven of his eight races and trainer John Gosden was delighted with Palace Pier's performance.

He told ITV Racing: "Yeah he is a lovely horse.

"He was relaxed in the race, but Frankie felt he got boxed in at the gate.

"However, he came through well, Frankie had to go early to the front and at 2 furlongs out he was quite lonely, but he stayed on and did well."
