Albion hope to see Ben White play for England this weekend.

If it happens, they will enjoy the match thinking about what he could do for them in the Premier League next season.

Not pondering how much he will go for when the slow-burning summer marketplace finally springs into life.

Arsenal were last night reported to be planning a bid for White, although there is no suggestion an offer has yet been made.

Tony Bloom and his senior staff at the Seagulls know White will be subject of interest this summer.

As he was last, when Leeds didn’t get him, and indeed two years ago, when they did (on loan).

While false reports of their head coach being in conversation with other clubs behind Bloom's back are likely to have surprised and angered Albion, they are quite used now to seeing players loosely linked with other clubs.

And quite used to that “target” being a home-produced centre-back who has played for England, come to that.

So they will be well-prepared for what could well follow.

And they will hope supporters recognise the fact they know what they are doing and have faith in their resolve to keep their main men unless a great offer for all parties materialises.

Albion were last night said to be keen to provoke a bidding war for White's services.

That might be right. Or it may be that their resolve to keep a star player is under-rated on the national stage.

England start their Euro 2020 group stage against Croatia tomorrow (2pm) and the expectations appear to be that White will NOT start.

But expectations have counted for nothing over the last three weeks.

Even White himself admitted that in his media conference this week.

There has already been a report that White is set to start versus Croatia.

Ironically, it is an injury to Harry Maguire which appears to have helped the door open.

Ironic because it was a move to Old Trafford for Maguire two years ago which led to all those reports that Lewis Dunk would be going to Leicester City.

Should White start and do well, Albion will know what it means for transfer interest and his potential value in the market.

The view at the club is there will always be interest in players who take the next step.

They resisted strong bids for White from Elland Road last year.

As The Argus have been reminded by a well-placed source, Albion have no intention of selling White.

They are looking forward to seeing what he can do in a major tournament.

Equally, they are looking forward to having him back after the Euros, and a holiday, for pre-season.

BEN WHITE CAN MAKE HISTORY IN EURO 2020

They see it as a wonderful experience to see a young player who has done so well being rewarded by his country.

White took to international football impressively in friendlies.

That was as sub against Austria and starting versus Romania, both 1-0 wins on a very public stage.

Albion are also convinced their player will have impressed away from the spotlight - around the camp and in training.

He will have shown head coach Gareth Southgate and his staff he can handle testing situations.

The aforementioned source told The Argus: “Ben is calm and assured. Articulate, sensible, friendly.

“All that will have been noticed by Gareth and his staff.”

While numbers regarding White’s value will be reported and guessed at, it is understood Albion themselves would not be keen on revealing their hand in that way.

Especially in a tournament summer, when values can fluctuate wildly and quickly.

They will have an idea of what he is worth and how that could change. Of course they will.

But the ideal is to see him walk out in Albion colours in August with a successful Euros behind him.
