Ben White was on red alert for a return to the England 23 last night – amid Covid confusion.

Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell were isolating after coming into contact with Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for Covid-19.

Albion defender White missed out on the matchday squad when the Scots drew 0-0 at Wembley on Friday.

An omission for Chilwell, who also missed the opening game against Croatia, could see White back into the 23.

It was unclear whether Mount and Chilwell would be available as Gareth Southgate spoke to the media yesterday evening.

He hoped to have an answer this morning.

England take on the Czech Republic at Wembley (8pm, ITV) with qualification and potentially top spot at stake.

Mount had been due to appear at the same press conference.

Asked whether the pair would be available for tonight’s game, Southgate said: “We don’t know at the moment.

“There’s obviously got to be quite a doubt but there’s still a lot of discussions and investigations going on behind the scenes, so at the moment they’re isolating and we just have to find out over the last 12 hours or so.”

Southgate revealed the England players were subjected to additional testing yesterday as a precautionary measure following the Scotland outbreak.

He added: “In terms of the testing, we had the mandatory PCR tests for the pre-game, and we’ve just followed that up today because of the situation that’s emerged with Scotland.

“It’s just belt-and-braces to make sure we’re OK for people to travel together and eat together.”

White has trained well and was close to getting on for John Stones during the 1-0 win over Croatia.
