Sussex have dropped overseas player Stiaan van Zyl for their next Championship match.

The South African batsman does not feature in the squad to face Kent at Canterbury tomorrow.

Sussex make six changes to the group which had the better of a draw at home to Glamorgan.

Coach Ian Salisbury said: “Unfortunately Stiaan hasn’t scored the runs he would have liked to as an overseas player.

“He himself is bitterly disappointed about that as he cares deeply about the team.

“Sometimes you have to make changes, it’s as simple as that.”

Van Zyl made a decent start to the campaign.

But he has scored just 42 runs in six innings across the last three Championship fixtures, bringing his average for the season just below 25 mark.

A host of players who were forced to self-isolate after Tom Clark tested positive for Covid are now available.

Jamie Atkins, James Coles, Tom Haines, Ollie Robinson, Sean Hunt and Harrison Ward all come into the 13-man squad while Will Beer, Mitch Claydon, Archie Lenham, Joe Sarro and Aaron Thomason drop out along with van Zyl.

Thomason has been required to isolate by NHS Test and Trace.
