Danny Welbeck is ready to make up for lost time – as he eyes a flying start to the new season.

The Albion striker has been a slow starter in some recent campaigns, not necessarily through any fault of his own.

He hopes a productive pre-season can help buck that trend.

Albion’s goal-getting resources are again under scrutiny as they prepare for the new season.

Welbeck will be a key figure in easing any concerns on that score.

The former England man continues to work hard with Albion on the training pitch.

And his numbers from recent years underline what a boost that can be for the Seagulls.

He said: “I’m pleased to get a good pre-season under my belt.

“You get your integration into the squad that way.

“I missed pre-season last year and I have actually missed a couple of pre-seasons due to injuries and that sort of stuff.

“I am very pleased to build that foundation, get that core resilience, build it up in pre-season.

“That puts you in good stead throughout the rest of the season.”

Albion had to wait to see the best of Welbeck on a consistent basis last term after he signed five games into the campaign.

His first start with Watford two seasons ago did not come until September 28 and he had to wait until after the restart in the summer for his first league goal.

Welbeck did not start a game with Arsenal in 2018-19 until October 7, although he scored as a late sub in the opening fixture against West Ham.

His first starts and goals in both 2015-16 and 2016-17 did not come until well after Christmas.

He would love to repeat his feat of 2017-18, when he started and scored in the opening game of the season as Arsenal beat Leicester 4-3.

Albion are gearing up for a friendly against Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday (5.30pm).

The Scottish champions will be cheered by 8,500 home fans and the game will be streamed via Rangers TV.
