Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister kept his Olympic hopes alive as Argentina secured a 1-0 win over Egypt yesterday morning.

They headed into the match needing a result to give them any chances of qualifying for the knockout stages after their defeat to Australia.

But after a goalless first half, Facundo Medina scored what proved to be the winner in the 59th minute.

Mac Allister played 89 minutes before being replaced by Thiago Almada.

However, they will take on Spain who are unbeaten in the tournament and have yet to concede a goal.

His Seagulls teammate Tudor Baluta got his first involvement for Romania in the Olympics in their 4-0 defeat to South Korea.

The midfielder started but came off in the 76th minute with Romania losing 2-0 and being down to ten men after Ion Gheorghe was sent off in the first half for two bookable offences.

The defeat means Romania sit fourth in Group B with three points from their first two matches.

With all three other teams in their group also being on three points it could be a dramatic finish to Group B on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Albion target Marc Cucurella started for Spain in their 1-0 win over Australia.

The Getafe wideman impressed with his performance down the left and looked very comfortable in possession.

The win leaves them top of Group C heading into their final game against Argentina on Wednesday (12pm).

Fellow Seagulls target Kaoru Mitoma played 79 minutes for Japan in their 2-1 win over Mexico.

Japan did have a man advantage for the last 22 minutes of the match, after Johan Vasquez was sent off.

The victory maintains their 100% start to the group.

Japan only need a point against France on Wednesday (12:30pm) to secure their place in the knockout stages.
