Former England defender Sol Campbell is unsure if Brighton’s Ben White will be the man to come in and marshal Arsenal's defence.

The 23-year-old is reportedly closing in on a move to the Gunners with his medical due to take place on Wednesday.

The transfer fee that Albion will receive for White is believed to be in the region of £50 million.

White will be under to pressure to help solidify an Arsenal defence which conceded the second-least goal in the Prem last season (39).

But Campbell, who made 135 appearances for Arsenal and won two Prem titles during his time at the club, has his doubts about whether White in the right man to be a leader at the back.

Speaking on TalkSport he said: “Forget about the price tag it is all about experience and whether he is going to command.

“I obviously don’t know much about him, but he got into the England’s Euros squad and is clearly a top player.

“For me hopefully it does work out, but if you want that instant impact and you want to build your defence you bring a Ben White in, but you also bring in a Raphael Varane in you bring both of them in.

“It is a difficult one it is a lot of money, but they are looking at the years ahead and they see a future.

“They see someone that can come in and can play in midfield, play full back but he going to have a situation where at £50 million you are master of your position.”
