Former Brighton keeper Maty Ryan has undergone surgery on a knee injury he suffered in training.

The Australian international joined Real Sociedad from the Seagulls just over two weeks ago.

However, the La Liga side confirmed on Sunday in a statement on their website that the 29-year-old had suffered a knee injury, which he had surgery on yesterday: "Mathew Ryan twisted his right knee during training action last Wednesday.

"After performing the complementary tests, a lesion was observed in the cartilage of the external tibial plateau.

"On Monday he will undergo an arthroscopy, which will be carried out by Dr. Mikel Sánchez at the Vithas San José de Gasteiz Clinic."

Ryan then took to twitter this morning to post a picture of himself sitting up in a hospital bed with his thumbs up, along with the accompanying message: "Procedure done, now to smash the rehab and get back out there in a few weeks. Thanks for all the messages of support."

Ryan has yet to make his debut for Sociedad and is now set for a few weeks on the sidelines, meaning he will miss their opening league game against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Sunday, August 15.
