Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey will have a new international boss to impress after Lee Carsley was named as England’s Under-21s new manager last night.

Former Chelsea and England left back Ashley Cole has been named as his assistant manager.

Prior to picking up his hamstring injury in December which ruled him out of the rest of the season, Lamptey had earned his first call-up to the U21s in September under former manager Aidy Boothroyd.

He then made his debut later that month starting in England’s 2-1 win over Austria in European U21’s qualifier.

However, after England U21s were knocked out in the group stages of the European Under-21 Championship in March, Boothroyd announced in April that he would leave his role to focus on a return to club football.

Carsley had been manager of England U20’s prior to be promoted to U21s boss.

His appointment could bode well for another Albion prospect.

Carl Rushworth was involved in the England U20s squad under Carsley and he will now be hoping to impress during his loan spell at League Two side Walsall in a bid to hopefully earn a call-up to the U21s.

Albion target Valentino Livramento was also part of the U20s squad under Carsley and will also be hoping to catch the eye with his performances this season.
