Albion boss Graham Potter has told Russell Martin he will enjoy taking charge of Swansea City.

The Brighton-born former Norwich defender, 35, has taken over at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal.

Martin was previously in charge at MK Dons, who play an attractive brand of football in League One.

The former Varndean student and Albion academy player revealed he was already sure he would take the Swans job before he spoke to Potter.

But the words of the man who was in charge during the 2018-19 season underlined he had made a good choice.

Martin said: “I spoke to Graham and he spoke so highly of the club, of the people and of the area.

“He spoke about his connection with the fans and the staff who worked here.

“My mind was already made up to come here but to hear that was nice and reassuring and gave me a lot of confidence that this is the right place to move forward and progress.”

Swansea have forged a reputation for playing good football under bosses such as Potter and Roberto Martinez.

Martin, who also heads a thriving football academy in Sussex, appears a good fit to continue in that vein.

He said: “There is no doubt the supporters and club are connected to a certain way of doing things.

“I am looking forward to giving them a team that excites them, that they enjoy. I want to watch our team from the side of the pitch and enjoy it, otherwise what’s the point?

“I don’t want to be involved anything that I don’t enjoy - and that includes watching our own team.”
