How Albion players rated against Watford.

ROBERT SANCHEZ 6/10

Got used to the Premier League last season. Is now getting used to the cauldron of the proper Prem. Was more assured than at Burnley but can still improve. Got down to his left to make his one save of note. Caused an alarm with a misplaced pass in the first half.

ADAM WEBSTER 8/10

Flung himself in the way of a shot late on to cap a very good day’s work, both in protecting the goal and in bringing the ball forward or picking passes, long and short. Playing in a three probably gives him more scope to do all that.

SHANE DUFFY 8/10

Has kicked off the season well – as it seemed he did at Celtic. But the great thing is how it feels his individual efforts fit into what is around him. An early goal always helps. No one was going to stop him getting his head on that corner.

LEWIS DUNK 7/10

Solid and efficient at the back – and a cushioned chest back to Sanchez when the ball was driven across goal underlined his confidence.

PASCAL GROSS 7/10

Given that platform deep and wide from which to work his passes and the Cruyff turn, which came out a few times here. Surely opponents know he is going to do it! Another assist as he crossed for Duffy’s goal.

YVES BISSOUMA 9/10

Ever listened to a podcast and realised you had the speed set to 1½x? That is what it is like to watch Bissouma at times as his athleticism and anticipation put him just a step ahead. Exhibit A: The second Albion goal. Often has a clever first touch too to leave him in a position to make good use of possession.

ADAM LALLANA 7/10

A near full Amex rose to acclaim him for the first time. Linked play together, often in a deeper role, with authority and economy and kept things moving.

The Argus:

SOLLY MARCH 8/10

Matched against Sarr, one of the stars of the opening day, and came through that part of his role well while adding width further forward. Is willing to look up and survey options before delivering (or not) the cross but might have been more selfish on one second-half occasion.

LEANDRO TROSSARD 6/10

A livewire part of that bright opening and it looked like he might go for goal inside ten seconds. Lacking in end product but always a potential threat.

ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER 7/10

Set the tone by getting stuck into Watford from kick-off. Has a bit of devil in his play and is willing to track back – but a deft attempted finish drifted across goal.

NEAL MAUPAY 8/10

Tends to start the season well and that’s now two in two, as was the case last year. Finished with confidence after Bissouma released him and was a handful for Watford. His willingness to come deep and get involved, and to battle away, cost him when he was injured – one hopes not badly.

SUBS

The Argus:

AARON CONNOLLY 6/10

A half-time introduction for injured Maupay. His afternoon will be recalled for a bad miss, such is the life of striker. He admitted himself he needs to be finishing such chances but much of his other work as a lone frontman was good and drew applause.

ENOCK MWEPU 6/10

Sent on later to preserve what Albion had and did a sound job, box to box.

JAKUB MODER N/A

Possibly earned a start with his impact at Burnley. The fact he did not get it bodes well for Albion and their midfield options.
