Adam Hinshelwood believes a Worthing club stalwart might have been looking down on them as they grabbed a late winner.

The Mackerel Men went second in Pitching In Isthmian premier by winning 1-0 at home to Corinthians-Casuals.

Mo Diallo drilled home a 90th-minute penalty to secure the points.

Worthing paid tribute before kick-off to Steve Hoare, whose various contributions to the club included matchday announcing.

He died recently, leaving the club in shock.

Worthing boss Hinshelwood said: “He meant a lot to the club. He did a lot around the place.

“The turnout of the youth boys showed in what high regard Steve was held at the club.

“It’s a tough one but maybe he was looking down on us at the end and we were lucky to get that penalty.

“He was a really nice fella and he will be sorely missed.”

Steve’s son Marcus, Worthing’s club photographer, captured the emotion and the drama of the afternoon on camera.

Worthing rode their luck to secure the points before a four-figure crowd.

They survived numerous scrapes in their own box and saw Harrison Male brilliantly push a shot on to the underside of the bar before a needless foul gave them their spot kick.

Hinshelwood said: “We really want to see more creativity and chances on goal.

“I think the fans were probably bored in the first half.

“It was possession without any purpose and that’s definitely not what I want to be part of.

“We were thankful to come in level. I thought the defending and the blocks were top quality and we showed good desire in our box. The rest of the play was pretty poor.

“There is plenty to work on but three points build to our tally.

“I won’t settle for us playing in that manner too many times.

“I’m thankful we defended the way we did and we managed to sneak one at the end through a penalty.”
