He has suffered a ruptured inner ligament in his right knee, according to a report in his native Switzerland.
Xhaka is expected to miss at least six weeks.
He has been in fine form of late as the Gunners recover from a poor start to the season.
They head to the Amex after three wins, the last of them in convincing style against arch enemy Tottenham.
