Moises Caicedo was at the centre of VAR controversy as his Ecuador side suffered defeat.
While Europe debated France’s winning goal against Spain in the Nations League, the Albion midfielder seemed to be wronged in Venezuela.
He saw his close range finish ruled out for a very tight, arguably incorrect, offside call.
It would have been his second goal for his country.
Doubt remained as to whether he was in an illegal position as the ball was headed across goal following a free-kick.
The goal, right at the end of first-half stoppage time, would have put his team into a 2-1 lead.
They ended up losing 2-1, having led briefly though an Enner Valencia penalty.
GRAHAM POTTER COULD BE TOUGH TO GET - IF NEWCASTLE REALLY WANT HIM
Caicedo, on loan at Beerschot in Belgium this season, played the full 90 minutes.
Albion prospect Jeremy Sarmiento remained on the bench.
