Albion loanee Kaoru Mitoma is targeting a starting role in Belgium.

And he hopes that opens the door to a World Cup call.

The Japanese forward’s four league appearances for Union St-Gilloise have all come off the bench so far.

Third-placed USG host Seraing, who are 13th, today.

Mitoma is settling in well but believes there is more to come on the pitch.

He said: “This summer I was in the Olympics.

“I was happy it was in Tokyo, but unfortunately without spectators, but it was a magnificent experience.

“I’d like to play in other tournaments in the future.

“I came on loan but I’m happy because it’s a chance to show what I can do in Belgium.

“I can play in the top-flight and I see this as a first step. That why I made that choice.

“I can target a starting place but I need to win the confidence of the coach.

"The team have started the season really well so I need to seize every opportunity.

“I want to play in the World Cup but for that to happen I need to be selected by Japan.”

Mitoma, 24, is enjoying life in Europe.

He said: “My first impression of Belgium was they drive on the right!

“In Japan we drive on the left but I got used to it. It’s a nice place to live.

“Communication isn’t easy at the start but we speak English and sometimes more slowly to help me understand.

“I should improve with lessons.”
