It is more than 36 years since Albion won a league game away from home having been two goals down.

That remains the case thanks to an offside at Anfield on Saturday.

Leandro Trossard rounded Alisson and rolled the ball gently into the net beneath the eyes of a horrified Kop.

But he was offside as he ran on to Tariq Lamptey’s through ball.

Albion ended up drawing with 2-2 in the Premier League.

Their last away league win from two down remains a result which might have helped them into the elite.

They scored four goals late on at Grimsby in the last away game of 1984-85 to win 4-2 and keep promotion hopes alive going into the final day.

But Manchester City held their nerve to smash Charlton 5-1 and the Seagulls had to wait another 32 years.

Hans Kraay put them back into the contest before 4,034 on that Tuesday night at Blundell Park.

Then three goals in as many minutes - by Alan Biley and Terry Connor (two) - completed a comeback which, even now, has not been repeated.

Much more recently, Albion came from 2-0 down to knock Millwall out of the FA Cup on penalties in 2018-19.

In terms of Albion comebacks, Saturday feels like it must surely be the best given the surroundings, the opponents and the quality of the performance.

But there will be fans who still fondly recall a 3-3 at Coventry back in 1980-81 when Gordon Smith’s hat-trick brought Albion back from three goals down.

They have twice won in the top flight from a 2-0 deficit.

The Manchester City game last season, of course, and also versus Sunderland at the Goldstone in 1982-83 with goals from Tony Grealish, Gordon Smith and Gerry Ryan.

A win from two down away? Never in the top flight.

They have come from a long way back for draws at Southampton and West Ham in recent years.

There were a couple of 2-2 away draws from 2-0 down back in the old Division One days.

Specifically at West Brom in September 1979, when goals in the last seven minutes by Malcolm Poskett and Peter O’Sullivan secured the club’s first ever away point among the elite, and at Notts County two years later.
