Albion's comeback from 2-0 down at Liverpool has brought back memories of their previous such recovery at Anfield.

But a member of the class of 1991 – and former Seagulls coach - believes the club’s fans have never had it as good as now.

Ian Chapman went on as sub just before the goals from Mike Small and John Byrne secured a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup.

That was some feat by Barry Lloyd’s men.

They were a second tier team chasing a play-off place and were looking second best until the final quarter of the game.

Great days - and the replay was memorable too before Liverpool nicked it 3-2 in extra-time at the Goldstone.

The comeback delighted the blue and white hordes in a packed Anfield Road End and caught national attention.

But the big difference now for Chapman is Albion play the best in the land and expect to take them on.

Chapman was in the West Stand at the Amex for the recent game versus Manchester City.

And he followed from afar as Albion secured a 2-2 draw, and threatened to win, at Anfield on Saturday.

Chapman, who was part of Dean Wilkins’ managerial set-up a little more than a decade ago, is also a lifelong Albion fan and loves what he sees.

He said: “In the first half, Manchester City were very good and at half-time the manager changed it a little bit.

“In the second half, Brighton were excellent.

“It’s fantastic to see how far the club has come.

“To go to Liverpool, when they play these teams you actually fancy them to do all right.

“You’re not just hoping they do all right.

“I think that is where the club has changed since Graham Potter has come in.

“I was a fan as a kid in the late 1970s when Brighton were a really good side but I think this eclipses it.

“It’s the best squad the club has ever had and the manager is excellent.”

More than 30 years on, Chapman still has vivid memories of that FA Cup clash.

After a goalless first half, Ian Rush scored twice inside ten minutes attacking the Kop.

Small replied with a penalty and then sent the ball back across goal for Byrne to level with a diving header.

Chapman said: “We were 2-0 down and I went on as sub with Derek McGrath.

“I went on wide left and Derek was in the middle of midfield.

“I think Jan Molby was running the game massively in midfield.

“The instruction to Derek was to get right on him and get tackles in.

“He hit him with an old-fashioned tackle that got us all going as a team.

“The last 20 minutes were brilliant. We got on top and looked the most likely side to win it really.”

Liverpool were champions at the time having won – as it turned out – their last title for 30 years at the end of the previous campaign.

Chapman said: “They were the best about, as they are now. They had a really good side.

“I remember the atmosphere was incredible.

“Brighton took quite a few fans that day.

“We got both our goals at their end and it was great celebrating with all of them.

“When we had Mike Small and Budge (Byrne) up front, we always had a chance.

“We fancied ourselves later on in the game.”

Chapman’s first glimpse of Anfield mirrored that of many Albion fans who have visited the famous venue in recent seasons.

He said: “I always thought it was a massive stadium but when you get there it’s quite compact.

“The atmosphere was incredible, so intense.

“When I watched the highlights again all the emotion came back.

“Their crowd were so good and Brighton had one end and were so good as well.”
