YOUNG Albion star Jeremy Sarmiento has praised the club after he made his Premier League debut for the club.

The Ecuadorian international made his first appearance in the league for the club in the goalless draw against Leeds on Saturday after he came on as a second-half substitute.

Sarmiento had made his professional career debut on September 22 in the 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Swansea City.

During his ten minute cameo against Leeds Sarmiento gave Albion supporters brief insight into his ability with some bursting runs and a few step-overs.

The winger believes that the backing of Albion has helped him improve his game to another level.

The 19-year-old said: “It’s a happy moment in my career, it’s everything I’ve been working towards, and I am delighted the gaffer gave me an opportunity.

“I like to be a threat when I get on the ball – I wasn’t on for too long, but I wanted to make the most of it and do well.

“We’re frustrated that we couldn’t get the result, but we gave all our energy during the game.”

Sarmiento earned his first Ecuador cap in a World Cup qualifier against Bolivia last month.

The winger is delighted to be another name to come through Albion’s academy set-up and into the first team.

He said: “Before I moved to Brighton I’d had a tough year, but as soon as Brighton were interested in me it gave me that confidence. They set out a pathway for me and I hope that I have shown that I can be a part of the team.

“Brighton said ‘this is our plan, this is how we see you progressing and here’s the players that have done that'. It was then up to me to work towards getting my chance.

“I’ve been training with the first team, which has been a really good experience – it can only make you a better player. It’s really good for me to have the opportunity to work with experienced players who have taught me a lot. I am really enjoying my time here.

“I’ve had my senior call-up to Ecuador this season as well, and we’re doing well. Now I need to keep playing and keep impressing the coaches.”

Sarmiento will be hoping to get back on the pitch in Albion's next Premier League match, which is against fourth placed West Ham United on Wednesday night.
