ALBION striker Neal Maupay is enjoying his recent spell of being the hero.

The French striker has saved the club from defeat in their last two games with his late goals.

Last week his overhead kick earned the club a point at the London Stadium and on the weekend Maupay was at it again with his late contributions.

The 25-year-old scored deep into injury time to equalise at St Mary's Stadium against Southampton.

Maupay had started to come under criticism after he went seven games without a goal, with his last goal before the West Ham match being another late equaliser against Crystal Palace in September

However, he has now put that criticism behind him with his current form.

The striker took to social media to celebrate his latest goal, and said: "I'm having fun".

The short message, accompanied by pictures of him celebrating his goal, will be enjoyed by fans for whom he is becoming a cult hero.

Maupay, who now has six goals in 14 Premier League matches this season, was dropped to the bench in October for the match against Liverpool, but has bounced back and started to repay manager Graham Potter's faith in him.

The goals that have come this season have seen Maupay climb to third place in Albion's record goalscorers in the English top division.

The Frenchman has 24 goals to his name and is only two behind Glenn Murray and 13 behind Michael Robinson, who played for the club between 1980 and 1983.

If Maupay continues his current form then he could find himself close to Robinson's record at the end of the season.

The striker joined the club from Brentford for a reported £20 million fee on a four-year deal in 2018 and has played 89 times for the club.
