LEICESTER 1 ALBION 1

Albion picked up another point, another equaliser and another 1-1 draw for the collection.

But they might well have headed back home from East Midlands last night thinking their reward should have been greater.

Danny Welbeck got off the bench to head the leveller from a Neal Maupay cross.

That was a bench from which Bjorn Hamberg called the shots, helped by Bruno, in the absence of Graham Potter and Billy Reid.

Having been stung into action by a Patson Daka goal straight after half-time, they powered forward for much of the second period.

Kasper Schmeichel made a pair of super saves either side of the Welbeck leveller and Dan Burn had a header cleared off the line.

But the over-bearing feel will have been one of huge pride in the resilience and quality of that last 40 minutes or so.

This has not been a happy hunting ground for Albion or some of their individuals in recent years and they had to survive an early scare here.

The returning James Justin got a long way forward from right-back and Robert Sanchez had to block with his right foot from James Maddison, who had stepped inside Adam Webster.

Then Daka drilled narrowly wide although VAR nay well have found Harvey Barnes, who teed him up, to have been offside had the ball gone in.

Albion had to defend strongly for a spell and it looked like there was an interesting battle in prospect for Joel Veltman against the dangerous Barnes.

But they had a decent opening on the counter.

Trossard left Justin for dead and stood the ball up to the far post but Maupay miscued a difficult volley on the stretch.

The Argus:

Mainly, though, Leicester were asking questions.

Maddison went down very easily as Alexis Mac Allister challenged and the same Leicester man then whipped the free-kick narrowly wide of the near post and into the side-netting.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall curled one from outside the box straight at Sanchez as Leicester looking to build momentum.

Their penalty appeals were waved away as Ademola Lookman went down with Jakub Moder behind him.

Then Youri Tielemans’ shot deflected wide.

The best chance for the hosts, though, came as they released Lookman to the right of goal after Mac Allister had been eased off the ball in his own half.

Barnes found Lookman but Sanchez stood up and saved with his right foot.

A lot of good first-half work was undone almost straight from kick-off when Leicester took the lead.

They had a lot of men forward and it paid off.

Maddison had a shot blocked, Sanchez produced a fine save from Barnes but Daka fired in from close range.

It was, of course, a precious breakthrough – and galling for Albion.

But, if anything, that goal seemed to galvanise the visitors and put home nerves on edge.

Their best opening yet saw Mac Allister spoon a poor finish over the bar from the edge of the area after a pass from Pascal Gross.

Then Burn’s clever pass inside the defender and Marc Cucurella’s precise cross to the far post deserved much better than an ugly left-foot volley by Moder which threatened the big screen on the roof of the stand high above Kasper Schmeichel.

Albion sent on Welbeck and Tariq Lamptey and the pair so nearly conjured the leveller.

Lamptey’s cross was met by a Welbeck header which Schmeichel did really well to keep out low to his left.

Welbeck, looking hungry, had also played a big part earlier in that attack.

But Welbeck then struck from Maupay's delivery.

Albion’s third change saw Solly March replace Veltman.

The final sub was heavily involved in two moments from which Albion so nearly won the game.

He forced and delivered the corner from which Burn saw his header nodded off the line by Tielemans.

Then a super pass by March sent Trossard in – but he was denied by a very sharp Schmeichel save low down.
